Southern provinces to see lasting drought: Scientists

The Southern region will suffer lasting drought and the high salinity that are predicted to be taken place in the upstream of Mekong, Dong Nai and Sai Gon rivers, said scientists at an international seminar “Infrastructure and challenges of climate changes” held on November 19 in Can Tho City of the Mekong delta

Researchers said that the climate change has influenced greatly the making of fresh water in the Mekong delta. Even in Soc Trang Province, people had to stop using some wells due to high salinity. Meantime, the quality of underground and surface water sources in the region is facing the grave risk.

Seminar participants proposed many measures to reduce the decline of water resource and lasting drought. Tra Vinh Province authority has built a river water reservoir in Lang The River. It can provide enough demand for all residents in Tra Vinh Town. Especially, Holland-funded project worth VND270 billion (US$ 12,687,968) has proved effective in reality.
