Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka was given a warm welcome to Viet Nam this morning, when he arrived in Ha Noi for an official four-day visit at the invitation of Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung.
Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung highly praised the visit to Viet Nam by his counterpart Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka, saying that it demonstrated Sri Lanka’s determination to boost the comprehensive cooperation with Viet Nam and lift the two countries’ relation to new heights.
Speaking at the meeting, PM Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka expressed his hope to strengthen the cooperation with Viet Nam in economy and commerce, affirming that Sri Lanka always supports Viet Nam as an important partner on the regional stages such as South Asian and Southeast Asian forums.
Both prime ministers agreed to consolidate and further increase the traditional relationship, and promote economic co-operation between the two countries. Viet Nam and Sri Lanka should promptly establish a cooperative mechanism to share experiences in developing economy and accessing markets.
The two leaders agreed to cooperate in areas of investment, tourism, agriculture, industry, education and training as well as in terrorism issues, aiming at increasing the bilateral trade turnover to US$100 million by 2010.
To achieve the target, the two sides will actively create conditions for enterprises to seek opportunities for co-operation and investment, contributing to increasing the understanding between the two countries.
Both prime ministers also agreed that the inter-governmental committee of the two countries must soon hold the 2nd meeting to promote specific co-operative areas which have been signed.
On this occasion, PM Nguyen Tan Dung revealed the Vietnamese Government was reviewing to promptly open an embassy in Colombo in a bid to boost the cooperative relationship with Sri Lanka.
Also this morning, the two prime ministers witnessed a signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding on co-operation in agriculture between Vietnamese and Sri Lankan Ministries of Agriculture.
