State President Nguyen Minh Triet on Feb. 1 launched a tree-planting festival in northern Hoa Binh province, recalling Uncle Ho’s call in Spring 1960 for an annual tree-planting festival, which has become the national fine tradition.

Addressing the launching ceremony, President Triet urged the entire Party and people to exert efforts in planting trees and protecting forests in order to meet socio-economic development requirements and to build Vietnam into a “green, clean and beautiful” country.

Afforestation is not costly while bringing in great socio-economic and environmental benefits, he said, adding that deforestation is a crime that must be strictly punished.

The same day, the State President thurified and planted a commemorative tree at the Ho Chi Minh Statue in Hoa Binh city.
