The development plan includes the planting of 2.6 million hectares of trees nationwide and protection of the already 13.38 million hectares of forest cover and re-planting of 750,000 hectares of forests.
Under the forest development plan, 1.25 million hectares of new forests will be planted during the period 2011-2014.
The aim is to increase the forest cover to anything from 42 to 43 per cent from the current 39.5 per cent, and to 45 percent by 2020.
The forest protection plan will benefit more than 20 million people. The plan is one of the country’s key projects to encourage afforestation.
Since the afforestation project was launched in 1998, more than 2 million hectares of forests have been planted and 2.5 million hectares have been effectively protected.
In addition to its economic and environmental significance, the project has created jobs for local people and contributed to reducing poverty.
It has also raised awareness in local authorities and people about the benefits of forest protection and brought about socio-economic changes in many localities.
