As summer holidays draw near, students rush to apply for part-time jobs to earn extra money for their school fees for the following academic year as well as gain necessary experience related to their future careers.
Although students work at flexible hours and accept low wages, they still face a barrage of problems when seeking recruitment information, especially those who are visiting a job fair for the very first time.
Standing in front of the recruitment board at the Student Support Center, Ngoc The, a student of Cultural Art College, is very confused in selecting a suitable job for summer. Ngoc The is not very interested in the salary but considers timing and suitability a major decisive factor.
Meantime, Tram Anh, a student of Saigon University, quickly decided to work in a restaurant as she wants to practice her language and communication skills.
Thuy Duong from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is very lucky as she first applied to work part-time in a communication company but later she officially signed a long-term contract with them.
Currently, many online websites offer summer jobs and students have to merely click to accept them. Most websites classify jobs by shifts, timings and need, and they allow applicants to apply online.
Many corporates are employing temporary staff for promotional campaigns at wages of VND1-3 million per month depending on timing and workload. Jobs as flyer deliverers, home tutors or shop assistants are popular in summer.
Nguyen Trong Hoang, head of the Student Support Center plans to introduce 4,000 jobs for students and the center has sent letters to enterprises asking for their requirements for part-time staff.
Hoang said currently popular jobs are supermarket assistants, delivery personnel and workers at commercial centers with wages from VND80,000-120,000 per eight hour shift (US$3.33-5.71) or VND1.6-2 million a month ($95.2-238) depending on the nature of the work.
More and more students seek jobs online and through job fairs, as students are aware of the importance of working while studying as they can use the experience to add to their resume after graduation, said Hoang.
