They expressed the apology at a press conference at the company’s headquarters in Vung Ang Economic Zone, Ky Anh town, the north central province of Ha Tinh.

According to FHS deputy chief executive officer Zhang Funing, Mr. Zhu Chunfan who is deputy head of the company’s public relations (PR) department had expressed some individual points of views while talking to the press. That has caused misunderstanding and badly affected the company’s prestige and the relations between Formosa Company and Vietnamese government and residents.

The PR officer who said that “You have to choose either of fish or the steel plant,” is not authorized to make statements about the company in Ha Tinh, Mr. Zhang added. FHS will strictly handle Mr. Zhu for the wrong statement.

Answering reporters’ question on the volume of chemicals that the company had imported and how it used them, FHS director Qiu Renjie said that they were permitted by Vietnamese authorized agencies before importing the chemicals and abided by all related regulations and procedures.

The chemicals had been used for the company’s cooling systems, he said.

After the mass fish deaths occurred, the Ministry of Public Security on April 25 inspected the company and it had sufficiently supplied documents as required.

FHS has also cooperated with Vietnam’s authorized agencies in taking samples for investigation of the fish death. The company will not make any comment before the agencies give conclusions on the case and clarify if there is any connection between the company’s wastewater release pipe with the mass fish deaths, he said.

On April 26, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology announced that scientists had eradicated the cause of the fish death for oil leak and quakes.

The announcement was made basing on initial results by a group of the scientists from many institutes who had conducted field surveys to address the cause of the fish death.
They had measured parameters at the scene; taken 400 samples of water, marine sediments and dead fish; conducted researches through the earth observation satellite system VNREDSat-1 to record seismic activities and related studies before coming to the conclusion.

The scientists come from Institutes of Chemistry, Geophysics, Mechanics, Marine Environment and Resources, Marine Geology and Geophysics, Ecology and Biological Resources, Space Technology and Environmental Technology.
