Thu Thiem Bridge Slated for Late 2007 Opening

The construction of the long-awaited Thu Thiem bridge, which will link Ho Chi Minh City’s downtown area with Thu Thiem peninsula in District 2, is expected to be finished soon to open for traffic late 2007.

Construction companies of the bridge said they are quickening their pace to finish the job by late 2007, adding that part of the bridge heads’ construction in District 2 and Binh Thanh District has been finished.

Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan on Saturday visited the construction site and demanded that site clearance for the roads in Binh Thanh District should be completed soon.

The six-lane Thu Thiem bridge will facilitate development of a new urban centre on the Thu Thiem peninsula, and reduce traffic flow on the existing Sai Gon Bridge. It will also help to promote co-operation between Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces of Dong Nai and Ba Ria – Vung Tau.

The construction cost is estimated at over VND1 trillion, which is covered by the city budget.
