Tobacco smuggling makes dents in state budget

Illicitly imported tobacco makes a loss of ten thousand billions dong for the state budget, reported the Tobacco Association of Vietnam at a conference on tobacco smuggling.

The conference themed “Consequences of sales, transport and possession of smuggled tobacco towards the country’s economy and social security order” was held in the Mekong delta City of Can Tho yesterday,
According to the Association, for years, tobacco sector has offered million employments paying around VND20 trillion ($862,041,109 ) to the state budget.
Whereas tobacco business in the country is under strict control, smuggling is on the rise causing loss for state budget because it dodges special tariffs, VAT, and imported tax as well as causes social disorder.
At present, the fund against tobacco harm is VND300 billion which will all be used for activities against harms of tobacco while no fund for activities against smuggling.
Accordingly, the Association announced it will petition to the government, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance to allocate a sum for the anti-smuggling task.
