The cable-stayed Bai Chay Bridge in the northeastern province of Quang Ninh today opens to traffic, helping boost the socio-economic development in the Ha Noi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh Triangle.
Attending the bridge’s inauguration ceremony this morning were Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Phuc Thanh, Minister of Transport Ho Nghia Dung and the Consulate General of Japan in Viet Nam.
The main bridge is 903m long and 25.5m wide, includes seven lanes with four for vehicles, two for conventional means of transport and footpath. It has a main pier span of 435m – the largest ever in the world compared to similar bridges.
According to an engineer working at the project, with a 50-m clearance, the bridge allows 50,000-tonne vessels to pass through easily and cargo ships will find it easier to dock at Cai Lan deepwater seaport or Ha Long Bay.
Starting in May 2003 by Japan's joint partners Shimizu-Sumitomo-Mitsui and the Transport Ministry’s Project Management Unit N.18, the project had a total investment capital of VND 2.1 trillion (US$134 billion), which primarily came from the Japanese official development assistance (ODA) loans.
Bai Chay is currently the third largest pre-stressed concrete cable-stayed bridge in the country, following the My Thuan Bridge in the south and the Binh Bridge in Hai Phong, and is expected to give fresh impetus to socio-economic development in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh province and the northern key economic region.
