In the south, the ministry hopes to add an expressway from Go Dau to Xa Mat border gate in Tay Ninh province, connecting the economic development region of the province and Cambodia with HCM City. Its Go Dau-Tay Ninh section is expected to be completed before 2030.
In addition, many expressways will be expanded, including Phap Van (Hanoi)-Cau Gie-Phu Thu (Ha Nam) and Day Giay (Dong Nai)-Trung Luong (Tien Giang).
According to the ministry, as Van Phong in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa will be developed into an economic zone, the Van Phong-Nha Trang expressway will have eight lanes after 2030.
Along the North-South highway, the progress of several projects will be adjusted, with Cao Bo (Nam Dinh)-Bai Vot (Ha Tinh), Cam Lo (Quang Tri)-La Son (Thua Thien-Hue) and Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa)-Dau Giay (Dong Nai) sections and My Thuan 2 Bridge to be invested before 2020.
Under the national expressway network planning, 2,703km of expressway must be built by 2020. However, by that year, only 1,267km is expected to be completed. In 2021, more than 600km of North-South expressway is projected to be put into use.
Most expressways have from two to four lanes and a few have six to eight lanes, including Lang-Hoa Lac, Nhat Tan-Noi Bai, Hanoi-Hai Phong, and Hanoi-Bac Giang.
