Earthquakes consecutively reoccur in Thua Thien- Hue

According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, two earthquakes consecutively occurred within the last two days in the area of A Luoi mountain district, Thua Thien- Hue province.

The first earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter magnitude scale occurred in the place at 12: 38 am on December 6. The next magnitude 2.7 earthquake occurred in A Luoi district at 1: 25 am on the following day. It was centered at 16, 151 degrees north latitude and 107, 484 degrees east longitude with its epicenter location at 11 kilometers deep underground.
 
The geological experts said that A Luoi mountain district is located in Khe Sanh- Hue fault line of Da Nang- Khe Sanh major fault line across Da Nang, Hue, Quang Tri and Laos.
 
In geology, earthquakes usually occur when rock underground suddenly breaks along the fault, causing many earthquakes in locals in previous times such as the earthquakes in Song Tranh 2 hydropower area of Quang Nam, earthquakes in Dakrong Hydropower Plant dam of Quang Tri and earthquakes in A Luoi district of Thua Thien- Hue.
 
Mr. Nguyen Van Canh, an earthquake expert of Hue University of Sciences said that the re-operation of fault lines and earthquakes are compared to a volcano eruption wakes up.
 
Relating to the problem, Vice Standing Office of the Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue of Thua Thien- Hue province Dang Van Hoa said that the provincial People’s Committee has asked the province Department of Science and Technology and Institute of Geophysics to learn what causes earthquakes and where they occur in Thua Thien- Hue province.
 
The People’s Committee of Thua Thien- Hue also asked districtial people’s committees to evaluate damage by the earthquakes in their areas and publicize information on earthquakes to inhabitants.

The Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention, Search and Rescue needs to collaborate closely with the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center to map earthquakes in the region, provide timely announcement to residents, requested the People’s Committee of Thua Thien- Hue.
 
Earlier, eight earthquakes had hit the areas of A Luoi district since May, 2014 to September, 2015. And the most powerful earthquake was measured at 4, 7 on the Richter scale on May 15, 2014.

Three earthquakes consecutively occurred in the areas of A Luoi district on April 8 - 9, 2014, measuring over 3 and less on the Richter.
