Heat wave intensifies in southern region

The National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center said that the south central region and the southern region continued suffering hot and muggy weather yesterday with temperatures soaring to 35-37 degrees Celsius, which will remain unchanged or slightly increase today to reach 38 degrees.

From tomorrow, the heat wave will spread to the north central region with the highest temperatures hitting 35-38 degrees. The northwestern region will see the mercury soar above 37 degrees in places.

Many areas in the northern region have seen heavy rain triggering flooding because of a low pressure trough combined with a wind convergence zone, which have spread thunderstorms for the last two days.

Strong winds with hailstones swept through Bao Yen, Bat Xat, Bac Ha, Simacai and Muong Khuong in Lao Cai province.

Yen Bai province reported a total damage of VND3 billion (US$135,000) with 1,700 houses roofless and holed, seven collapsed in long lasting rains, tens of hectares of plants destroyed.
