'Kujira' storm makes landfall in Quang Ninh

By 8am today, heavy rains accompanied with level 7 wind speed swept through Ha Long City. Until now, 460 tourist boats and fishing rafts were anchored in safe places.

The latest statistics showed that a person was injured by storm in Hai Phong city’s Bach Long Vy Island; and two fishing vessels with 15 fishermen were flooded under sea water in Binh Thuan province.

Moreover, strong wind blew up 41 house roofs in Bac Lieu province’s Hong Dan and Phuoc Long district. At present, local authorities and army forces helped residents repair their houses.

The National Hydrology Meteorology Forecast Center reported that heavy rains occurred in the east- northern provinces, Hanoi city and the areas along Hong River.

The coastal provinces of Quang Ninh, Nam Dinh and the north central provinces experienced heavy rains with rainfall of 50- 80 mm. The east- northern and north- central provinces are forecast to see heavy rains on the large scale today and tomorrow.

Earlier, the Central Steering Committee Flood and Storm Prevention and Control held an emergency meeting in Hanoi to discuss about measures dealing with Kujira storm.

At the meeting, Director of the National Hydrology Meteorology Forecast Center Hoang Duc Cuong said that Kujira storm with high rainfall and complicated direction affected directly to Quang Ninh province and Vietnam’s northeastern provinces.

After entering eastward of Hai Nam Island (China), the storm moved into Gulf of Tonkin, threatening directly to Quang Ninh province of Vietnam and Guangzhou province of China.

The National Hydrology Meteorology Forecast Center predicted that Kujira storm will make landfall in Quang Ninh province’s Ha Long city on Wednesday.

By the evening yesterday, level 9 strong wind swept through Co To, Bach Long Vy Islands.

In next several hours, 9- 10 level wind speed will locate in the areas of Ha Long, Cam Pha City; meanwhile, the area of Lang Son, Hai Phong will see 5- 8 level wind speed, added Hoang Duc Cuong.

According to weather forecast, Kujira storm will weaken into tropical pressure zone, causing heavy rains on the large scale in Cao Bang, Lang Son, Bac Giang and Hai Phong province after making landfall.

In order to actively cope with storm, local authorities and functional forces yesterday required more than 65, 000 fishing vessels to move to safer places to avoid the storm.

The People’s Committee of Quang Ninh province helped residents remove fishing rafts from Ha Long, Cam Pha to Tien Yen, Mong Cai.
