Phu Quoc, Da Lat flooded because of hot development

Surprised flooding in Da Lat city of Lam Dong province and Phu Quoc island district of Kien Giang province caused directly by historical record-breaking rainfall several days ago was due to hot development without a synchronous planning.

The flooding occurred in the highland and island regions with the specific geographical characteristics that rarely see flooding like what happened several days ago. 

The rainfalls in the Phu Quoc island district yesterday was gradually receding compared to previous days so local people returned their home.

Floodwater in the residential areas and roads caused disturbance for people’s daily life.

According to the People’s Committee of Phu Quoc island district Tran Chien Thang, the tropical depression circulation across the province triggered incessant heavy to heavy downpours, thunderstorms and sustained winds during the first haft of this month.

The Hydro- meteorology Forecast Station of Kien Giang province reported total rainfall at 501.2 mm from August 2-5. An excessive downpour led to a rise of water level on August 8 while the flooding has been ended.

Amid the urgent situation, the armed and functional forces evacuated nearly 2,000 people to safer places.

Statistics from the local authorities showed that more than 63 kilometers of road over Phu Quoc district and around 8,424 houses was stranded under water due to long- lasting downpour days.

Violent winds blew up 24 houses and personal properties with total loss of more than VND 107 billion.

Outside of Phu Quoc, Da Lat city braced for relentless consequences from former flooding and rainy cyclone.

As reported, the natural disaster caused damages of around 11 houses, 20 hectares of flower and vegetable crops, 3,000 meters of houses being up-roofed and dozens of cars being flooded.

In the recent years, flash floods has consecutively occurred in city of Da Lat, focusing on neighboring areas near Me Linh Lake, Truong Van Hoan and Ngo Van So streets and along Cam Ly stream.

The large number of glass- houses has rapidly grown in the recent consecutive years, being one of reasons triggering serious flood spells in city of Da Lat. 

The province of Lam Dong has total 4,500 glass-houses.

In recent years, Phu Quoc has focused on development of residence, tourism, production and business which threatened to discharge water system.
