5G network is the latest version of the mobile communication technology, working in such wave bands as 28GHz, 38GHz, and 60GHz. This new network will be about 100 times as fast as the current 4G, allowing many interesting features to be launched. Some prominent examples of the applications include self-driven cars which can make important decisions more quickly based on specific situations, higher-quality video conferences, or the monitoring of trouble urban issues like traffic congestion, parking lots, and pollution. It also helps the automation and connection process in the era of Industry 4.0, and thus has become the key to enter the world of Internet of Things, where sensors are used to the fullest capability.

According to Mr. Tran Vinh Tuyen, next year, the city will focus on the project ‘Transforming HCMC into a smart city’ via the implementation of building better electronics, telecommunications, and information technology infrastructure as well as the launch of this 5G mobile network.

5G is expected to greatly benefit the city since it has always concentrated on developing the electronics and information technology fields. The latter is now one of the nine main strengths of HCMC as it contributes 60 percent to the total metropolitan service products. The 5G technology is predicted to create high-speed connections to aid the information transmission and handling processes.

Mr. Tao Duc Thang, Deputy General Director of Viettel said that his company owned great advantages in piloting this new technology. He also expressed his hope that proper information would soon be released so that his company would prepare appropriate designs and equipment to use the planned wave bands announced by the Ministry of Information and Communications.

Until May 2018, Vietnam has a total of 76.8 million Internet users. Among them, 64.2 million are now mobile bandwidth subscribers, including 51.2 million 3G users and 13 million 4G ones. Forecasts have shown that the new 5G will affect 4.6 percent of activities in various aspects of life.
