IT businesses in HCMC need more innovations, breakthroughs

Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung yesterday worked with domestic information technology (IT) companies of the southern region in Quang Trung Software City (Ho Chi Minh City) to form feasible solutions for the development of ‘Make in Vietnam’ IT staples since these businesses can only answer 30 percent of the market needs.

According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, the digital transformation process has delivered various golden opportunities for Vietnam, especially local IT enterprises of all scales.

However, since these companies are only able to meet one-third of the total demands of the market, the Minister suggested that they should collaborate more closely with one another and with universities. The investment in university laboratories should also be considered to better implement IT into operation.

Commenting on proposals of IT companies about adjusting unsuitable regulations and policies for more efficient operation, Minister Hung first highly appreciated all of them, saying that the central government has already adopted many supportive policies toward all IT businesses, yet the result was not as expected. He then added that the new ones will especially focus on those which are able to develop practical products particularly welcomed by consumers or those wishing to market their products internationally.

Domestic IT products are not well-received partly because they have no distinctive features or effective marketing strategies. “It is the breakthrough and innovative characteristics in new Vietnamese IT products that we all need”, insisted the Minister.

The meeting also discussed about policies and preferential taxes for IT businesses, especially startup ones; and about possible chances for middle, small, and super small scale IT companies in the Industry 4.0 era.
