Viettel operates first 5G station in HCMC

Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) yesterday finished suitable infrastructure and piloted the first 5G station in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). It is speeding up the equipment installation process to introduce 10 more stations in Ward 12 of District 10 in this August.

This pilot in HCMC is the first time Viettel has exploited Telco Cloud to build the whole core network for 5G technology. The new platform helps the company to reduce preparation time while becoming more flexible in operating that network, greatly suitable for the trend of virtualizing telecommunications networks and moving them to cloud storage in the world.

As regulated in License No.26/GP-BTTTT by the Ministry of Information and Communications, Viettel is now piloting the 5G mobile network on the C-Band, at a frequency between 3700MHz - 3800MHz in HCMC. The connection speed in the first piloting tests for 5G varies from 1,000 – 1,300Mbps. This will be continuously adjusted to the optimal one in the near future.

Mr. Tao Duc Thang, Deputy General Director of Viettel, stated that his company aims at delivering a chance for residents in HCMC to experience high-speed services of 5G technology. He added that this pilot is the base for Viettel to comprehensively evaluate the band and coverage of its 5G network as well as possible applications before commercializing 5G in 2020.

Before this, Viettel operated the first 5G station of Vietnam in Hanoi and was able to make the first phone call using the 5G network in May 2019. The event made Vietnam one of the first nations which successfully pilot 5G technology.

Viettel’s process is also correspondent to the standard route of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
