Ho Chi Minh City Football Cup Gets New Name

The Ho Chi Minh City Football Cup, recognized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), has got the new sponsor and new name.

Bach Viet, a Vietnamese communications company whose trading name is BV Media, signed a five-year sponsorship contract with the Ho Chi Minh City Football Federation on April 26. Therefore, the tournament is renamed as BV Cup from 2006 to 2010.

The two sides sign the sponsorship contract

The two sides did not reveal the total contracted value. However, Bach Viet Company chairwoman Dang Thuy Dung said the sponsorship value would increase by 10% every year; therefore, the prizes would rise accordingly. This year, the prizes will total US$70,000.

The annual Ho Chi Minh City Football Cup started in 1992. The tournament was named after main sponsor LG in the past six years until 2005.

Ho Chi Minh City Football Federation General Secretary Tran Van Mui said Viet Nam’s national squad or Olympic team would take part in the BV Cup every year. He added his federation and the Viet Nam Football Federation will cooperate to invite national or Olympic teams of other countries to compete in this AFC-recognized tournament.

The tournament is scheduled late August or early September every year, taking place at Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City with the participation of four teams.
