Football: Viet Nam Leaps Up in World Ranking in July

The recent impressive performances of Viet Nam’s football team have made them the fastest mover up the world ranking table.

The latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking saw the men in red zoom 25 places up the chart into the 117th position.

They are one of the eight best teams in the 2007 Asian Cup after seeing off the United Arab Emirates 2 – 0 and settling a 2 – 2 draw with mighty Qatar in the group phase.

The magnificent performances in this year’s Asian Cup of other two Southeast Asian countries – Thailand and Indonesia – also pushed them up in the rankings.

Thailand ascended 15 places to 107th while Indonesia rose 16 places to reach the 127th position. Malaysia’s 2007 Asian Cup campaign ended after three losses to China, Uzbekistan and Iran in the phrase stage, causing them to slide from 149th to 154th place.

A blend of attractive football and good results has also seen the Vietnamese side take the second spot to Singapore in the Southeast Asia’s ranking, behind Thailand.
