At Thong Nhat Sports Stadium against a strong Jordan, Vietnam began confidently, running constantly toward goal and taking shots.
In the 18th minute Nguyen Thi Muon beat goalkeeper Zina Ismail after connecting from a pass from the right by Kim Hong.
Jordan equalized in the 33rd minute through striker Maysa Ziad
But within three minutes midfielder Thanh Huong sent Vietnam ahead again.
In the second half the pattern continued, with Vietnam attacking relentlessly. But they were unable to find the goal as they squandered several opportunities.
They took until the 85th minute to enlarge the lead when midfielder Thanh Huong again beat Zina to score.
The win gives Vietnam a head start in their effort to qualify for the 2015 World Cup. The top four teams in the event qualify, but since Japan are the defending World Cup champions, there will be five this time.
Earlier Australia drew 2-2 with Japan.
The first match in group B will be played on May 15, with Korea and Myanmar squaring off at 5:15pm Vietnam time.
China will then take on Thailand at 8:15pm.
