Caravelle extends half-price rate bookings thru June

The Caravelle Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, in recognition of its Golden Jubilee, has prolonged the booking period for its half-price room rate promotion through June, giving guests one more month to sign up.

The five-star hotel is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month. Now, the celebratory discount will be in effect for all bookings made directly with the hotel (+84 8 3823 4999, www.caravellehotel.com) through June 30.

No refunds or cancellations are possible once the booking is complete, and all booked stays must be complete by Dec. 31, 2009.
 
On May 8, the Caravelle marked 50 years with an anniversary celebration. Renowned AP and CNN correspondent Peter Arnett delivered the keynote address at the anniversary event.

“For me it was the most famous hotel in which I had ever stayed in when I first came to Saigon 47 years ago as a kid reporter,” Arnett told a press conference at the hotel on May 7.

Caravelle general manager John Gardner told the press conference, “This year we celebrate a golden anniversary. It’s been 50 years since the original hotel opened its doors and embarked upon its stories journey,”

The hotel opened in 1959. It was renamed Doc Lap (independence) in 1975.

In October of 1992, for further its developing, Saigontourist Holding Company, teamed with Glynhill Investment Vietnam (a venture of Hong Kong’s Lai Sun and Singapore’s Keck Seng) as a joint investment partner in a new company called Chains Caravelle Hotel Joint Venture Company that sought to revive the landmark property, renovated 135 rooms to 75 bigger rooms.

The Caravelle made a comeback in 1998, with the refurbishment of the original 10-story, building and the complement of a 24-story tower.
