Government warns coffee farmers not to increase output as prices fall

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development yesterday warned coffee planters not to expand the area under the crop because prices are expected to drop by 5 to 8 percent next year.

The price of coffee is now around US$ 1,700 per ton, 2 percent lower than 12 months ago and is set to fall further.

Exports by the end of last month topped $1.78 billion.
