Logistics industry short of 2 million employees

According to the Vietnam Logistics Association, logistics industry is short of around 2 million employees.
Figures by the association showed that there are more than 30,000 logistics companies across the country, of which around 4,000 firms are operating in domestic and international shipping sector.

The number of 100-percent-foreign-owned firms accounted for only 1 percent of total logistics companies in Vietnam, that of joint-venture ones made up 10 percent and that of local ones accounted for 89 percent. However, foreign-owned and joint-venture firms held up to 80 percent of market share whereas local ones merely possessed around 20 percent of market share. Most Vietnamese firms provide services for small supply chain in the territory of Vietnam with some segments such as shipping, warehousing, customs clearance service and less than container load service.

Local logistics enterprises are mainly small-sized firms with a shortage of human resource. Most of them are untrained and lack of professionalism. According to the association, the logistics industry is short of about 2 million employees because among more than 30,000 firms, more than 32 percent of firms have less than 50 employees, nearly 19 percent of firms have from 50 to 100 employees and only more than 10 percent of firms have more than 1,000 employees.
