Scientist Sells Rice Strain for US$61,000

Cuong Tan Company Ltd., recently signed a contract to buy the right to use and market two new cross-bred rice varieties from their patent holder, Dr. Nguyen Thi Tram.

The firm paid the scientist VND10 billion (US$61, 000) for her scientific achievement.

Although the TH3-3 cross-bred variety is not as good as China’s peers, its harvest time is greatly reduced, Tram said.

The new variety has created 1,000-1,500 tons of seeds per year. If this rate goes on, 60,000-70,000 hectares is expected in 2010, accounting for 1,500-2,000 tons of TH3-3, which in turns takes up ten per cent of areas earmarked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for cross-bred rice.
