2006 Canh Dieu Vang Film Festival Wraps up

Ha Noi, Ha Noi, directed by Bui Tuan Dung and Ly Vi and Ao Lua Ha Dong (The white silk dress), directed by Luu Huynh, won gold awards in the  best feature film category at Viet Nam’s 2006 Canh Dieu Vang (Golden Kite) Film Festival in Ha Noi on Saturday.

Ao Lua Ha Dong (The white silk dress), produced by Phuoc Sang Studios, BHD and the Anh Viet Company, also won the Audience Award at the 11th Pusan International Film Festival in Korea last October.

The film is set in the 1960s and tells the story of a poverty-stricken woman named Dan and her hunchbacked husband who attempt to hang on to a precious Ha Dong silk dress that belonged to the woman’s mother. The movie succeeds in creating true-to-life Vietnamese characters while venerating the traditional ao dai dress.

The Vietnamese-Chinese co-production of Ha Noi, Ha Noi illustrates the story of a Chinese girl who must leave her Vietnamese lover and return home because of war. Upon arriving in China, she discovers that she is pregnant with a baby girl. The film then fast-forwards forty years later to trace the journey of the woman’s granddaughter to Viet Nam to discover the land that she had learned of through her grandmother’s stories.

The film is a co-production in every sense of the word with actors, scriptwriters and directors being both Chinese and Vietnamese.

Chinese artist Gan Dinh Dinh won best actress for Ha Noi, Ha Noi
For the first time in the Golden Kite’s four-year history, best actress was handed to a foreign artist – China’s Gan Tingting, for her lead role in Ha Noi, Ha Noi. Quoc Khanh won best actor for Ao lua Ha Dong and best director went to Luu Huynh for Ao lua Ha Dong.

Other winners at the festival, organized by the Viet Nam Cinematography Association (VCA), included:

- Best supporting actor: Hoang Hai for Ha Noi, Ha Noi.
- Best supporting actress: Thanh Thuy for Sinh Menh (Life)
- Best script-writer: Nguyen Minh Tuan for Sinh Menh (Life)
- Best cinematographer: Trinh Hoan and Nguyen Tranh for Ao lua Ha Dong
- Best documentary: Khoang cach (The distance) directed by Tran Phi
- Best science documentary: My Son-mien di san (My Son-heritage region) directed by Nguyen Van Huong
- Best animated film: Chuyen di xa cua tac ke (The gecko’s trip) directed by Tran Khanh Duong
- Journalist prize: Sinh Menh (Life)

The gold awards for best serial and short TV films went to Chay an (Bribe), directed by Vu Hong Son, and Nha co ba chi em (The Family with Three Daughters), directed by Do Thanh Hai who also won the best director award for a short TV film.

Bui Tuan Dung of Dam cuoi o thien duong (Wedding in heaven) got best director for a serial TV film. Silver awards are given out in all categories as well.
