Ca tru (traditional Vietnamese folk songs) lovers enjoyed a live performance of the time-honored music at the home of Viet Nam’s greatest traditional music master, Professor Tran Van Khe.
The concert began with a trio performing on a phach or bamboo percussion instrument with two wooden sticks, a three-stringed dan day or long-necked lute with 10 frets and a trong chau drum.
The group artfully combined poetry and music, using a variety of traditional melodic forms.
A performance of a song entitled “Ly Con Sao” by the Professor himself, accompanied by Pham Thi Hue on the ty ba (a four-stringed pear-shaped lute), captivated the audience who sat mesmerized in silence.
Ca Tru music has been recognized as an “intangible cultural heritage of humanity” by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
