Harry Potter Fever in Viet Nam

The seventh Harry Potter book (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) is big news in Viet Nam. The HCMC Book Distribution Corporation (Fahasa) sent out a record-breaking 6,000 copies in only one morning, double the number when the sixth book of the series was released.

It might not seem a big number for a distributor but, given that the book retails for VND600,000 (around US$40) for the English edition, it is quite impressive.

For the book to be released in Viet Nam on the very day it appeared in every bookshop in the world, Fahasa had to negotiate things like security and release time with Bloomsbury Publishing, the producer of the Harry Potter series.

Seven in the morning is not a convenient time for a book release, so Fahasa had to run an advertising campaign in the days leading up to the launch. During this time more than 2,000 copies were ordered.

Fahasa also spent over VND500 million (US$31,250) on transportation, another record for the company.
