More than 6,000 items, ornamental plants, bonsais, rock-gardens, dried trees, grafting stones, cacti, ornamental fish and various valuable and rare flowers from throughout the country, are to be displayed at Ho Chi Minh City’s annual flower festival for the 2008 lunar new year (Tet), said the Ho Chi Minh Public Parks and Greenery Company.

The festival is to include exhibitions of Vietnamese calligraphy, flowers, ornamental fish, rock-gardens and variety music shows, folk games, performances of southern folk music, dragon dances, calligraphy and tea drinking, human chess playing and nightingale fighting.
One highlight is to be a spring trade fair showcasing high-quality Vietnamese products where holiday shoppers can complete the process of bankrupting themselves for festivity’s sake.
The 2008 Lunar New Year Flower Festival is to take place from the 20th day of the 12th lunar month to the 6th day of the 1st lunar month of the next year (January 27 to February 12). Admission: VND15, 000/person.
SaigonTourist Corporation, organizer of the Nguyen Hue Flower Street and Giant Banh Tet (glutinous new-year’s rice cakes) festival just announced sponsors have contributed more than VND15 billion (US$90,000) for the most historically popular events it is hosting the Tet holidays.
Tet 2008 in HCMC is to be marked by major programs such as decorative street lighting on main streets, including Le Duan, Nguyen Hue, Le Loi and Dong Khoi in the heart of the city; the Nguyen Hue Flower Street from the 29th of the 12th lunar month to the 4th day of the 1st lunar month of the next year (February 5 to 10); giant Banh Tet (glutinous new-year’s rice cakes) festival from the 4th of the 1st lunar month of the next year (February 10) on Le Loi Street; an two outdoor musical performances, one for the opening ceremony of the Flower Street and one on the eve of Tet.
