The opening ceremony of Hue Festival 2008 will take place tonight. The festival will last until June 11.
The festival is using the theme “Cultural Heritage with Integration and Development.” It is imbued with the cultural characteristics of Viet Nam as well with those of the former imperial city of Hue. It intends to expand international exchanges and tourist development.
The biannual festival will draw traditional and modern art troupes and sculptors from more than 20 countries, the largest number of international performers to date, including Australia, Belgium, China, Germany, France, Japan, Britain, the U.S. and South Korea.
The artists, coming to the central province of Thua Thien Hue from all corners of the globe, will entertain festival-goers with more than 70 programs of music, dance, drama, circus and installation art.
This year’s festival will mark the 15th anniversary of Hue’s recognition as a world cultural heritage site and the fifth year since nhã nhạc, the royal music of Hue, was recognized as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
In addition to spectacular opening and closing ceremonies, the Hue festival will include reenactments of the enthronement of King Quang Trung, Nam Giao and Xa Tac rituals, an áo dài (traditional dress) festival and a program exploring the legend of the Huong (Perfume) River
