HCMC People’s Committee proposes $48.6 million for milk program in schools

People’s Committee in Ho Chi Minh City proposed to implement milk program in school in the academic year 2018-2019 in preschools and primary schools in outlying districts Cu Chi, Hoc Mon, Nha Be, Can Gio and Binh Chanh.

As per calculation, cost of the program for the period 2018-2020 is nearly VND1,135 billion ($48.6 million ). Of the amount, nearly VND350 billion will be taken from state budget and milk supplier will contribute nearly VND240 billion and parents will contribute nearly 48 billion.
One of discussions in the People’s Council’s unusual session today were proposal of the municipal People’s Committee about milk program in schools to improve Vietnamese students’ stature.
The program will be implemented in preschools and primary schools in the academic year 2019-2020. For children aged 6-10, in addition to meals, they need to have milk which provide essential nutrition and vitamins for their growth.
People’s Committee affirmed that the Department of Education and Training has taken poll on parent’s opinion and received consent.
Along with this, HCMC targets to reduce the number of undernourished kids below 4.4 percent amongst preschools students and stunt below 6.8 percent.
Kids in public and private facilities all will benefit from the program. Specifically, students will have milk in nine months except 3 months summer vacation. Each will have one carton of milk a day and five times a week.
Students from low-income families or those living in social houses, state budget will support half and milk enterprises will contribution half.
