Rate of children wearing helmets increases

The Department of Education and Training and the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation reported rate of children wearing helmets on motorbikes increased from 22 percent to 60 percent since 2010.

Despite the increase number of helmet use, police handled 4,035 traffic violations in across the city according to the report.  These infractions occurred in Districts 1, 9, 12, Binh Tan and Go Vap of Ho Chi Minh City.

There is a big gap in the rate of children wearing helmets in urban districts than in suburban districts, said Nguyen Dieu Nuong, Director of Asia Injury Prevention Foundation.

The Bureau of Education and Training of District 9 proposes to raise fines to parents driving children without helmets.

Local authorities will soon launch additional campaigns to raise awareness of helmet use.
