Teachers in Mekong Delta provinces receive Vo Truong Toan Prize

The innovative methods and dedication shown by Mekong Delta teachers to make their wards into better citizens were recognized yesterday morning.

At a ceremony held in Vinh Long province to celebrate the National Teachers’ Day, 25 outstanding teachers from provinces of Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Tien Giang, Long An and Vinh Long were awarded the Vo Truong Toan Prize.

A total of 60 awards worth VND300 million (US$17,427) were given to teachers in the Mekong Delta at the ceremony.

The audience was moved with the stories of some of the awardees.

Nguyen Van Thanh from the Nguyen Thong High School in Long An Province has taught for 34 years. Worried that his students do not like to study history, he would draw up maps of battles and other events to make the subject more interesting.

The lessons taught by Vo Thi Ngoc Nga of Nguyen Dinh Chieu High School in Ben Tre province always laid the emphasis not only on imparting knowledge, but also the know how to become a useful person for society at large.

Bui Thanh Thao from Vinh Binh High School in Tien Giang province graduated from Ha Noi university of Education, and volunteered to go south to teach, and guided many students to do well at the province level.

For children in the Huong Duong nursery school in Vinh Long, Thach Thi Van Ni is a mother away from home.

92-year-old former teacher, Mai Thanh Phung of the Nguyen Binh Khiem high school in Long An province came on stage to congratulate the teachers who received the prizes.

Attending the ceremony were Le Thanh Xuan, deputy chairman of Vinh Long People’s Committee; Nguyen Tan Phong, deputy editor-in-chief of Sai Gon Giai Phong; and Pham Ngoc Trang, deputy head, southern region of the Prudential Vietnam Life Insurance Company.

The ceremony was broadcast live on the Vinh Long Broadcasting and Television Station.

The Vo Truong Toan Prize, sponsored by Sai Gon Giai Phong and the life  insurance firm Prudential, honors outstanding teachers dedicating their lives to education and plays a role as a motivation for teachers to wholeheartedly play a part in the growth of national education.

Over the last five years, 230 teachers in the delta have received the Vo Truong Toan Prize. While yesterday marked the 5th award ceremony for Ben Tre and Soc Trang provinces and Can Tho city, the other nine provinces in the delta were making their debut.

On the same afternoon, the teachers visited the Van Thanh Temple in Vinh Long town to burn incense for famed teachers Duc Khong Tu and Vo Truong Toan.

The association of former teachers celebrated the 26th Teacher’s Day yesterday morning at the Tran Nhan Ton elementary school in Binh Chanh district of HCMC. About 200 former teachers in the district attended the celebration.

The National Teacher’s Day falls on November 20.
