A Part of Stomach Replaces Gullet for 3-Month Old Baby

Dr Dao Trung Hieu, Head of Surgery Ward of Ho Chi Minh Pediatrics Hospital, said that a complicated operation has been successfully done on the 3-month old patient Pham Nguyen Tr., who had been diagnosed to be born with esophageal atrophy and was unsuccessfully operated on twice by pediatrics clinic.

When taken to the hospital, the patient was in undernourishment (only 3.2 kg in weight), pneumonia and fed with a tube. The surgery lasted for five hours. The doctors cut a part of his stomach and use it to replace the atrophied esophagus.

This is the first operation in Viet Nam for the youngest weak baby with new technique.
