Bird flu kills one in southern province

The southern province of Kien Giang has confirmed a human death from bird flu as Vietnam’s newest case of the H5N1 virus on people.

The victim was Danh Ni, born in 1994, a resident in Thanh Hung Commune, Giong Rieng District, said Dr. Nguyen Van Hai, director of the Kien Giang Preventive Medicine Center.

Ni died at 7:30 AM on Jan. 16 at the Kien Giang General Hospital, said the doctor.

According to the source, the man left his village six months ago to go to Can Tho City, also in the Mekong Delta, to work at a duck farm. He got a high fever on Jan. 10 and bought some medicine for self-treatments but his conditions became worse. He then came back to his district Giong Rieng’s hospital for treatments.

He was transferred to the Kien Giang General Hospital on Jan. 15 with high temperatures and breathing problems, then died the next day, said Dr. Hai.

The doctor said his center collected samples and sent them to Pasteur Institute Ho Chi Minh City. The test results showed positive with the H5N1 virus.
