The hospital is the first infirmary in the country to perform robotic-assisted kidney transplant. The first donor, 53, agreed to donate his kidney to his 55-year-old cousin while the 27-year-old daughter is the recipient of her father’s kidney in the second case.
Head of the hospital’s Urology Department Prof. Thai Minh Sam said that because it was the first time to perform robotic-assisted kidney transplant from living donor, surgeons performed carefully and took 4 hours for the first case and 3.45 hours for the second.
Because it was endoscopic renal surgery, the patients just stayed two days in the hospital.
Prof. Sam said that there are some benefits to robot-assisted renal endoscopic surgery : Generally, less blood is lost during the operation and patients often recover faster and with less pain because the cuts are small.
Cho Ray hospital adopted robotic-assisted operation from October 23, 2017 and surgeons have succeeded in 68 robotic-assisted operations; however, it is the first time, the technique has been used for kidney transplant from living donor, said Prof. Sam.
