His transplantation, the second of its kind, has been performed by surgeons of Viet Duc Hospital. He is the first lung transplant patient who has been discharged from hospital.
Before the operation, the 38-year-old man had been diagnosed with severe terminal bronchiectasis at the last stage of the disease. Recently, he had been extremely ill and constantly required ventilator and oxygen.
He had a chance of surviving with a lung transplant; otherwise, he was just able to live one year.
Accordingly, surgeons were soon performed the transplantation on him after being informed of donation of a brain-dead patient on August 12.
After 15-hour operation, patient Khuong recovered and his new lung worked well.
He was discharged yesterday but he had to come to the hospital for periodic check-up.
The donor was 20 year old man who was left brain dead by a horror traffic accident. His father decided to donate his heart, liver, kidney, two corneas, and lung to save others suffering fatal diseases.
