People should know non-communicable disease risks: Health Minister

People should increase their awareness of non-communicable diseases to reduce impacts of its risk factors, said Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien at the meeting on non-communicable diseases held by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization yesterday in Hanoi.

Statistically, non-communicable disease deaths in Vietnam make up 73 percent of total deaths. Of the percentage, 43 percent die before the age of 70 and burden of non-communicable diseases accounts for 66 percent.
The health minister said that medical scientists are taking heed to non-communicable diseases generally and COPD, asthma particularly because of burden of disease, economy and high rate of related deaths.
Risk factors, such as tobacco and alcohol use, improper nutrition and environment pollution contribute substantially to the development of COPD, which are sweeping the entire globe, with an increasing trend mostly in developing countries
Ill people can take part in daily activities if they are detected early and have good treatment
On the occasion, Minister Tien asked medical institutions to strengthen and enhance prevention of the diseases in grass-root clinics.
Preventative activities, diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable diseases should be implemented in district medical facilities in a bid early detect these diseases.
