Record number of swine flu cases reported

The number of swine flu cases in one day reached a record of 104 people, the Ministry of Health announced August 21.

The newly infected patients raise the total number of H1N1 flu cases in the country to 1,847 and two deaths, as of 5pm August 21.

The Highland province of Gia Lai confirmed two more residents contracted the flu. They are an employee of Co.op Mart supermarket in Pleiku City and a pupil of Chu Van An Primary School. This takes the total number of cases in Gia Lai to 31.

The supermarket has closed its doors for two days to disinfect the premises.

Eight ninth-graders have tested positive at Tran Hung Dao Secondary school in Quy Nhon City, central province of Binh Dinh, said Dr. Le Quang Hung, deputy director of the province’s Department of Health.

Tens of fellow students have presented symptoms of high fevers and sore throats.

Medical workers from the district health clinic and the province’s Department of Preventive Health took the children to the General Hospital.

The scenes were reported in Le Loi Primary School, where 22 students presenting flu-like symptoms were taken to the hospital. 

Medical workers will supervise residential quarters where the students live and monitor neighbors’ health conditions.

The provincial People’s Committee supported measures to purchase equipment for treatment of the flu.

The recent European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s report said the A/H1N1 flu has spread to 178 countries and territories around the world, with 227,562 people affected and 2,073 deaths reported.

Nations in the southern hemisphere continue to see complicated developments of the pandemic with rapidly increasing numbers of new cases and fatalities. Argentina reported 404 died of the flu, Brazil 192, Australia 102 and New Zealand 14.

In East Asia and Southeast Asia, the disease is developing in a complex manner with new infections and deaths rapidly increasing.

Japan has reported over 60,000 cases and three deaths, South Korea has had two deaths, the Philippines eight, Indonesia three, Singapore 11, Malaysia 67 and Thailand 111.
