Swine flu becoming more widespread in Vietnam

The Ministry of Health reported 262 new cases of A/H1N1 on September 15, raising the total number of swine flu patients to 5,164.

Six people have died so far and 4,501 others have been discharged from hospital, according to the ministry’s Department of Preventive Medicine and Environment.

The number of infected people has crossed 200 for three successive days, Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga, head of the department, said the epidemic has started to spread widely, especially among students after schools opened for the new academic year in September.

Health authorities have ensured there is an adequate supply of Tamiflu pills and other products for treatment but with some patients dying, the ministry has ordered the Treatment Management Department to verify treatment procedures.

It also exhorted people to adopt hygienic practices to protect themselves and the community.

People should tell workers at the nearest medical facility about their health condition when they have symptoms like fever, cough, and sore throat, it said, warning they should not self-medicate.
