Controlling force seize smuggled poultry

To effectively stop poultry smuggling, the committee will have a formal meeting with the Chinese Embassy in Viet Nam to cooperate in prevention of illegal importation of poultry. Measures include seizure and culling of poultry at Chinese border points before entering Viet Nam. The committee also requested local authorities to reorganize inspector forces and impose severe fines for any infringements and promptly destroy illegal fowl imports .

In the meeting, head of Veterinary Institute Truong Van Dung informed that the 10 blood samples out of a total of 30 taken from smuggled fowls in Quang Ninh province, which borders China, had tested positive for the H5N1 virus subtype.
FAO's Chief Veterinary Officer and ECTAD Manager Joseph Domenech highly praised Viet Nam for its vaccination campaign which has brought about apparent effects in different regions and for VN's compensation policy to encourage people to discover new outbreaks of the epidemic.

The deadly H5N1 virus has killed at least 108 people worldwide, including 42 people in  Viet Nam since late 2003.
