Twelve Ho Chi Minh City-based businesses received the 2009 Green Business Award for protecting the environment from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the HCMC People’s Committee at a ceremony in the city on July 6.

KIDO Joint Stock Company won the first prize, Majestic Hotel and Thien Long Group shared the second prize, and Vinamilk affiliate Saigon Milk Plant and two others received the third prize.
Eight other businesses received consolation prizes and prizes meant exclusively for export processing zones.
They all received a certificate and the right to have the Green Business Award logo printed on their products.
Speaking at the ceremony, deputy chairwoman of the city People’s Committee, Nguyen Thi Hong, said the award is aimed at encouraging and honoring businesses that comply with the Law on Environmental Protection, create products that are environment-friendly, clean, and safe, and promote environment protection among the public.
The ceremony were also attended by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran The Ngoc; director of the city Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Dao Anh Kiet; director of the Department of Science and Technology, Phan Minh Tan; deputy director of the Department of Industry and Trade, Quach To Dung; head of the Export Processing Zone and Industrial Park Authority, Vu Van Hoa; and Sai Gon Giai Phong Editor-in-Chief Tran The Tuyen.
Tran Quoc Nguyen, the general director of KIDO, which had won the 2nd prize at the first Green Business Award earlier this year, said: “Since our target customers are mainly children, we attach importance to food hygiene and safety. We have created new technical solutions for ‘green’ production, environmental protection and energy saving.
“The first prize is a great honor for us and we will make more efforts to protect the environment.”
A representative of Thien Long Group, which moved up from third place last time, promised the company would continue its efforts to become “greener and greener.”
“Award-winners will have an advantage while exporting to fastidious markets,” Ms Hong said.
“Their compliance with environmental regulations will help develop their business in a sustainable and efficient manner,” she added.
The city Department of Natural Resources and Environment and Sai Gon Giai Phong are associated with selecting the winners of the Award and organizing the ceremony.

Consolation prize: Thai An apartment building belonging to Dat Lanh Real Estate Company, Central Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company No. 25, Thong Nhat Milk Plant and Truong Tho Milk Plant (both belonging to Vinamilk)
