HCM City About to Build $200 Mln Monorail

Streetcar is popular in many countries but not yet available in HCMC

The country’s biggest economic hub has advanced one step closer to building a US$200 million tramcar system that is scheduled to operate in early 2012.

The HCMC Department of Communication and Public Works on April 9 signed a memorandum of understanding with Thanh Danh Construction and Trading Co. Ltd. of Viet Nam and Malaysian company Titanium Management about the construction of the 12.5 km monorail.

The route will link Ben Thanh in District 1 with Mien Tay Coach Station in District 6 and have 23 stop stations. It also boasts fifteen pneumatic-tire tramcars, capable of carrying 238 passengers and supplied by the French group Translohr.

The project will be implemented under the Build-Operate-Transfer form.
