HCMC tightens clean water supply network: Ministry

Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien and delegation from the Ministry have worked with the city People’s Committee on disease circumstance and food safety in the city.

Recent cases of acute diarrhoea in Le Minh Xuan Commune in HCMC’s Binh Chanh District have been blamed on the water supply. Tran Kim Thach from Saigon Water Supply Co (Sawaco) said that the company has used tanks to supply clean water to residents in distant districts where water pipes can not access; however, a representative from water environment management complained these water tanks are musty that it can not ensure the sanitation.

Furthermore, tests showed water quality is low as it is mixed with chemicals and other substances. There have been some open defecations in Binh Chanh District.

Accordingly the health minister asked the city authority to tighten water sources for daily activities as the diseases are breaking out.

Hua Ngoc Thuan, deputy chairman of the city People's Committee, said that the Ministry and the government should add Shisa into the list of banned substances as it is harmful to users’ health.
