HCMC to support salt makers to widen production area

Ho Chi Minh City's agricultural expansion division and the People’s Committee of Can Gio District intend to provide monetary assistance to salt makers to expand their base production area.

As per the planned project, salt makers will be provided with a total VND50 billion (US$2.4 million) as deferred payment with no interest rate for the purpose of expanding their base production area.

The money will be used to cover 1,000 hectares of salt fields with canvas, about VND50 million per hectare, in Ly Nhon salt village.

The technique of using canvas to cover the ground for salt extraction has been operational since 2008 and has proved very effective. The canvas method helps in preserving the salt crystals during the rains and greatly reduces energy consumption. It also helps in improving output by 100-120 tons per hectare as well as the quality of the industrial salt.

The cost of canvas floor covering is 15-20 percent higher than salt produced by traditional methods.

However the new technology has proved valuable in 60 hectares of salt producing areas of the Tien Thanh Salt Cooperative.
