The man who drove his car into several motorbikes at the Ly Thai To – Su Van Hanh crossroads in HCM City has been detained for three days, a senior police officer said on Oct 8th.

Doctor Tran Anh Huy ( born 1969 ) crashed his car into several motorbikes at the Ly Thai To – Su Van Hanh crossroads in HCM City on the Oct 7th afternoon, killing at least two women and seriously injuring 13 others.

The scene of the accident

The 13 damaged motorbikes, including two which went up in flames in the collision, were scattered along a 100m-long section of the road.

According to senior lieutenant colonel Le Van Doan, vice head of the District 10 police, the initial investigation revealed that the driver of the car intentionally sped up to pass a minor crash between two other cars and lost control before crashing into the motorbikes which were stopped at a red light.

The accident was due to technical fault, not because the driver was drunk as rumors said.

"Many people, including women, were blown up on the car. Blood and bodies were everywhere. It was so horrible," said a witness.

The driver ran from the scene but was caught by passers-by and brought to the police.

Traffic was held up for hours after the accident.
