American jet makes emergency landing in Chile

SANTIAGO, Nov 10, 2010 (AFP) - An American Airlines jet with 120 passengers and a crew of 12 aboard made an emergency landing late Wednesday after taking off from Santiago for Miami, and encountering a hydraulics problem, police said.

There were no injuries reported after the Boeing 767 took off from the Chilean capital's Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport; crew discovered the problem and made an emergency landing in Santiago, police added.

"The American flight, with 120 passengers and 12 crew members, took off at 0100 GMT for Miami but had to make an emergency landing due to the hydraulics glitch. It landed at 2316 local time (0216 GMT)," a police spokesman told AFP.

"Everyone is fine and with no additional problems," the spokesman said.

The passengers were being put on later flights to Miami.
