The City police in District 7 arrested a couple in connection with mistreatment and exploitation of innocent children, some of them handicapped, by forcing them to beg or hawk lottery tickets.
While raiding the rented house of the couple, Ho Dinh Chau and Tran Thi Hong, both 42 and from the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, police rescued four children named Nguyen Dinh, 14; Nguyen Thi Lien, Nguyen Van Dung and Tran Van Nam, all three 13.
Dung and Nam were suffering with burns and ulcerations on their fingertips.
According to initial investigation, the four children have been asked to help the couple sell flowers. Every day, the couple would drive the children to areas in District 1 and 7 and force them to sell flowers.
The families of the children in Thua Thien-Hue Province were sent VND1.5 million each month as salary for working with the couple.
The couple tortured and beat the four children if they failed to find buyers. Once Chau ordered Dung to kneel on the skin of a durian and at another time put a burning cigarette on their fingertips, which caused burns and painful ulcerations.
After being released from the couple’s rented house, the four children were sent to a support house of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.
Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City police have uncovered many gangs exploiting and abusing little children, including those handicapped, by forcing them to earn them money by begging or hawking lottery tickets.
