According to the Customs Division at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, the elephant tusks were part of the checked-in baggage of two Vietnamese passengers arriving on board Flight TG556 from Thailand to Vietnam.
The passengers said that the tusks had traveled from Angola to Kenya, and then onto Thailand for delivery to a person in Ho Chi Minh City.
After the two Vietnamese arrived at Tan Son Nhat Airport, they left the checked-in bags with the elephant tusks on the conveyor belt and did not declare them at customs. When officials opened the bags they found 137 kilograms of elephant tusks worth US$218,000.
Customs officials have temporarily seized the tusks as the two passengers failed to present any import license documents.
