High police officer arrested for helping brother flee from VN

The Security Agency investigation under the Ministry of Public Security arrested and detained Police colonel Duong Tu Trong (born 1961, living in Hai Phong),

Duong Tu Trong, deputy chief of the Hai Phong police department in charge of administrative management on social order, was accused of helping his older brother Duong Chi Dung, Vinalines ex-boss, flee from Vietnam.

The 52-year-old police officer was charged of violating article 275 of the Vietnam’s penal code relating to the organization of fleeing from Vietnam, according to the investigation security unit under the Ministry of Public Security.

Trong was charged ‘a major link’ of the case to help Dung escape from Vietnam before police arrest in September last year. Dung involved in a corruption case when he was in the seat of chairman of the state-owned Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines).

Trong was holding positions as chief of criminal police department and deputy director of police department in Hai Phong.

Dung, 56, was arrested in a Southeast Asian nation following an international wanted notice for alleged economic offenses when he was board chairman of the Vinalines.

Dung was later extradited to Vietnam by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and charged with “intentionally flouting state regulations on economic management, leading to serious consequences”.

Trong becomes the 8th official arrested for helping Dung escape Vietnam. Other detainees include several policemen of the northern city of Hai Phong.

So far, the Security Investigation Agency has prosecuted seven persons including: Lieutenant Colonel Vu Tien Son (47 years old, former Deputy Chief of Police criminal investigation, of Hai Phong city); Vu Van Sau (44-year-old,  police chief of An Tho ward, An Lao district, Hai Phong); Pham Dinh Nghien (43, Vice Police Chief of An Tho ward); Ha Trong Tuan (48, living in Le Loi street, Ngo Quyen District, Hai Phong); Major  Colonel Hoang Van Thang (43, Head of police section for Environment, Public Safety in Hai Phong); Lieutenant Nguyen Trong Anh (police officer in the anti-criminal and investigation section of  Hai Phong Police)

The relating organs are issuing arrest warrants against Dong Xuan Phong (Hai Phong customs Department official)
