Large-Scale Digital Camera Smuggling

On January 15, 2006, according to the investigative police, the People’s Procuracy decided to prosecute and arrest Nguyen Thanh Vu (born in 1971, living in Ho Chi Minh City) for smuggling.

On January 10, 2006, in the Tan Son Nhat airport, the office of investigative police (C15) caught Nguyen Thanh Vu by surprise smuggling hundred of digital cameras from Hong Kong to Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Vu’s testimony, he has bribed three customs officers of the Tan Son Nhat air port with USD1,600 to smuggle seven containers of digital cameras into Ho Chi Minh City.

Besides, he also transported the smuggling goods from Hong Kong to his relatives’ house in Ho Chi Minh City by express couriers; and then, delivered them all to his shop. Therefore, Nguyen Thanh Vu became on of the biggest digital camera suppliers in Ho Chi Minh City.

Meanwhile, the office of investigative police questioned seven customs officers including four who had been on duty at the air port on January 10, 2006, and three postal customs officers. All of them said that they were careless, so Nguyen Thanh Vu could bring the digital camers into Ho Chi Minh City, and deny all bribery charges. However, according to the investigative police, Vu has bribed to the customs officers several times.
